Camp Feather Winds 2008 - Let's start planning.

Hello everyone,
It is time to start creating Camp Feather Winds 2008. I started this blog so that everyone can share their ideas for camp this summer. The location for camp will be the Boy Scout camp in Juneau, Alaska also known as Eagle River Camp.
The specific dates are not yet determined, but should be worked out in the next couple of weeks. I expect that camp will be held the middle of July. So let's get started. What are your ideas about camp? Julia

Very Nice. Great to see TAGSC implementing such interactive media.

I am thrilled that camp is going to be at the Eagle River Scout Camp. I love the place, am very familiar with the endless options that it offers girls (yes, let's get out there and cater to older girls!!!) and I would love to direct camp. The weather is a total crap shoot up there during the summer. Late August tends to get chilly and rainy, so the earlier, the better. July works just fine.

I would be ecstatic about holding camp for 10 days or more, and we could indeed hold sessions for arts and crafts, or drama, kayaking trips, white water trips, glacier hiking, mountain biking, backpacking, outdoor living skills, and anything else girls are excited about. We could have a pioneering theme with candle making, soap making, pottery, outdoor cooking, and old-timey music. How about starting a blog or sending out an e-mail newsletter that asks girls what they're interested in for camp? We could create a poster for middle and high schools all over the SE communities getting girls informed and excited about what happens at camp (they think Girl Scouts is all about selling cookies).

In my experience, the easiest way to bring supplies to Eagle River is by boat at high tide. Supplies can be ferried easily from the dock at Auke Bay. The Boy Scouts had a good-sized boat for this purpose. I don't know if we can borrow it, but Lee has a boat, and I'm sure a ton of other fine folks in the Girl Scout Family have a few, too. It takes a good-sized crew to load up the boats, unload them by the lodge, and haul the supplies in. It is much safer than the helicopter route, as you might know. The Polaris is great for hauling in small stuff, like errand groceries, but it took quite a few trips with gear. If we could arrange a boat, that would be better. It only works right on the high tide!

There you go. I'll be cooking up new ideas in the next few months. Let me know your budget for recruiting staff down here. I am excited already about another journey up North.

Happy New Year,

Take good care,

Kayak

This is great to hear that camp planning is happening now. My girls are so excited about camp this year and even though Haines was absolutely beautiful our girls are happy to hear it is in a different location. I am looking forward learning dates of the camp. Please let me know what I can do to help out.
Thanks
Jaro

Hey all - Ace here. I am so excited to be coming back to camp this summer. I thought it might be neat to get some ideas from girls for this year's t-shirt design. The design should be fairly simple useing bold lines so it can be printed/silk sreened easily (not a lot of shading). Different colors could be possible, but black & white ideas are the most versitile. This is not an official contest, but if anyone has ideas they would like to share let me know. Email at acerrific@aol.com or snail mail at 9355 SW Capitol Hwy. Portland, OR 97219
And TELL YOUR FRIENDS ABOUT CAMP! The more the merrier I say. :)
